There is always hope!
I welcome you back to the transformed Health Equals Freedom website. I originally setup this website in 2014 with the goal to ‘help people’ with their health with information on prevention.
During that time I have been through multiple health challenges myself and with others. I have discovered that the things I have learned are primarily useful for those in the very early stages of cancer. This is when people need a lot of support, are very scared, and are also most motivated to change their circumstances.
From a medical perspective, it is also when the healthcare team is either most conservative or aggressive, depending on the cancer, which can have quite different effects on a person’s emotional and physical wellbeing.
One of the newest and most empowering shifts in medicine is to take a ‘patient-centred’ approach. This means that the person undergoing treatment has the power to choose what happens to when and at what time. Cancer treatments may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, diet-modification and exercise, but just like all cancers are not the same, nor is any treatment and associated outcome.
What we all agree on is that the belief that something is working and of benefit can have the most power for the patient and their family. So much so, that the placebo effect, also called the ‘power of the mind’ or the belief that a treatment is working can have up to 80% benefit on a person and has to be accounted for whenever designing a trial for a new medicine.
With that I leave you with this fantastic Ted Talk from my late cousin’s brain surgeon, Dr Charlie Teo. My cousin’s first brain tumour diagnosis was at 27 and his prognosis was just three months. We sought Charlie’s second opinion and gained another 9 years of amazing experiences with my cousin Shannon, as well as a new member of the family, his son, Charlie. There is no such thing as false hope.
I trust my new website provides information and support for those newly diagnosed and their families. If this is not your current situation or that of your family, feel free to pass-on to those currently touched by cancer, thank you.
Yours in good health,
