Common Cold vs COVID-19 symptoms – what are the differences? As a Cancer Healthcare Navigator and a trained Virologist I am very alarmed at the type and amount of misinformation about COVID-19 on the internet, social media and media. I have put this short video to summarise the key differences between the symptoms of the Common Cold and COVID-19 to help you tell them apart quickly.

Summary Cold vs COVID-19
- Cold – sneezing and runny nose, cover your nose if sneezing, cough into your elbow, wash your hands properly with soap – stay at home! Your GP has no treatment for the Common Cold virus.
- COVID-19 – coughing and fever – cover your mouth when coughing and cough into your elbow, wash your hands properly with soap and wear a mask to stop spread to your family, and other people. Call the COVID-19 hotline 1800 020 080, ring ahead to your GP and let them know you think you need COVID-19 testing. The majority of people will get over COVID-19 by themselves. Those with other diseases, such as cancer, and the elderly are at high risk of complications and not getting over COVID-19 easily without healthcare help, so keep the lines free.
